Born in Ghana, children’s book illustrator and author, Nathalie Dieterlé’s African childhood greatly influenced her artistic expression. A child in Cameroon until age six, her father, a doctor, had a significant impact on her life and work. Today, she lives Montreuil, a suburb of Paris, where she revels in the intellectual and artistic effervescence of that city.

Dieterlé studied graphic design at The Pennington School in Paris and continued her studies in illustration at the Arts Décoratifs School in Strasbourg, France.

Her whimsical, fanciful and joyful imagery has appeared in children’s books published by numerous publishing houses in France including, Gautier Languereau, Didier Jeunesse, Hachette Book Group, Casterman, Nathan, Éditions Albin-Michel, Éditions Belin, Lito Publishing, Epigone Press, Mango Publishing and Les Éditions L’Élan vert.

In all, Dieterlé ‘s illustrations have appeared in nearly eighty books. With titles like, I Am the King, and Too Big, Too Small, many of her books are published in French.

Publishing houses in the US (Orchards Books), Japan, China (Beijing and Gingko Book Co.), Brazil (Editora Scipione), England (Kaleidoscope Publishing), Denmark (Carlsen and Forum Publishing Group), Spain (Combel and Edelvives), Italy (Salani Editore), Greece (Patakis Publishers) and Korea (Miseghy Children’s Press and Piaget Korea) have all featured her work.

Dieterlé’s expressive, childlike drawing style, her cartoon-like characters and facile use of ink and color washes appeal to publishers and editorial clients. Her work has been commissioned by manufacturers of children’s toys and games and appears on postcards.
